Viewing James Condit Melville (1875-1949).

James Condit Melville (1875-1949).

James Condit Melville, a 1902 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, served in the U. S. Army during the Boxer Rebellion in China in the mid-1890s, as captain during World War I, later in the National Guard. He practiced law in Minneapolis from 1908 to retirement in 1946, specializing in mechanics lien law. He had interests outside the profession, as was noted in memorial services for the Hennepin County Bar Association after his death on April 13, 1949, at age seventy-four:

"Mr. Melville was an intense student of Shakespeare and he was familiar with all of his writings and could quote extensively therefrom. Also he was an amateur student of the Bible having read the same through from cover to cover on many occasions. He was a pianist of more than average ability."
