Viewing Uri Locke Lamprey (1842-1906).

Uri Locke Lamprey (1842-1906).

Uri Locke Lamprey practiced law in St. Paul from the 1860s to 1883 when he left his firm to devote his full time to managing his considerable real estate investments. But this change could also be termed "from lawyer to litigant" because he quickly became engaged in numerous lawsuits over his real estate holdings, a few against Russell Sage, the well-known New York financier. In several of his appeals, the Minnesota Supreme Court issued important rulings on riparian rights. He also was an avid sportsman who with others lobbied the state legislature to enact laws protecting fish and game. When he died on March 22, 1906, at the age of sixty-four, the St. Paul Pioneer Press headlined his obituary, "Father of the Game Laws."

This article is composed of obituaries, a bar memorial and Minnesota Supreme Court cases in which he was a party.

In 1998 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources published a pamphlet titled "Uri Lamprey: Father of the Minnesota Game Conservation Movement." It is posted in the "Conservation" category in the Archives of the MLHP.
