Frederic Hathaway Chase, "Lemuel Shaw: Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, 1830-1860" (1918).

Lemuel Shaw (1781-1861) served as the Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1830 to 1860. There he issued influential rulings on railroads, the police power, the fellow-servant rule, municipalities and commercial law, among others.

He is the subject of three biographies. The first, by Frederic Hathaway Chase, was published in 1918 by the Houghton Mifflin Company of Boston. It is posted here.

The standard biography is "The Law of the Commonwealth and Chief Justice Shaw" by Leonard W. Levy. It was published in 1957 by Oxford University Press.

The third is "The Genius of Lemuel Shaw: Expounder of the Common Law" by Elijah Adlow, published in 1962 under the auspices of the Massachusetts Law Quarterly.
