Beveridge (1862-1927) was a progressive Republican Senator from Indiana from 1899 to 1911. After he left the Senate, he became a biographer of John Marshall, who served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. Later he began but did not complete a biography of Abraham Lincoln.
The second volume covers Marshall's life from 1789 to 1801, and is subtitled "Politician, Diplomatist, Statesman." It was published in 1916.
