Frederick Andrew Inderwick, "The King's Peace: A Historical Sketch of the English Law Courts" (1895).

Frederick Andrew Inderwick (1836-1904) was an English barrister who specialized in probate and divorce cases. In 1895 he published "The King's Peace: A Historical Sketch of the English Law Courts." The phrase "King's Peace" refers to protections granted by the King at certain times for certain people and their property and later extended by courts and the common law to everyone at all times. Inderwick's "Sketch" is a form of social legal history, intended to educate the public of how important English common law and courts are to the establishment and protection of their rights. As he explains in an "Introduction":

"[O]ur laws have been framed and our procedure has been settled in the interests of the people; that for their benefit these Courts exist; that through the medium of the Courts internal quiet is secured, contracts are enforced, rights are respected, and injuries are redressed; and that the safety, the freedom, and the social happiness of our nation are mainly dependent upon the fearless and impartial administration of the King's Peace."
