Viewing "Trial of Queen Caroline" Part 1 (1879).

"Trial of Queen Caroline" Part 1 (1879).

In 1795 Princess Caroline married Prince George, and they had one child. They separated shortly thereafter and in 1814 Caroline moved to Italy where she was rumored to have an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Pergami. In January 1820 George became King of England and Caroline Queen. At the King?s demand, a bill of divorce was introduced in Parliament. It passed the House of Lords after a lengthy contentious public hearing---this was the famous trial of Queen Caroline. The bill was never offered in the House of Commons. King and Queen thereupon reached a settlement. The Queen died in August 1821, at age 53. At the trial Queen was represented by Henry Brougham among others.
