They separated shortly thereafter and in 1814 Caroline moved to Italy where she was rumored to have an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Pergami. In January 1820 George became King of England and Caroline Queen. At the King?s demand, a bill of divorce was introduced in Parliament. It passed the House of Lords after a lengthy contentious public hearing---this was the famous trial of Queen Caroline. The bill was never offered in the House of Commons. King and Queen thereupon reached a settlement. The Queen died in August 1821, at age 53.
