John Prentiss Bishop, "The First Book of Law" (1868).

John Prentiss Bishop (1814-1901), who wrote many legal treatises, was best known for his works on criminal law. In 1868 he published an introduction to the study of law, directed to young men who wished to go into the law. The complete title of his book explains his aim: "The First Book of the Law; Explaining the Nature, Sources, Books, and Practical Applications of Legal Science, and Methods of Study and Practice." It is posted here.

It complements a book published over three decades earlier, Samuel Warren, "A Popular and Practical Introduction to Law Studies" (1835). It also is posted on the MLHP website.
