Viewing "Judge Dillon's Farewell." (1879).

"Judge Dillon's Farewell." (1879).

On the afternoon of Friday, June 27, 1879, a ceremony by the state bar honoring Circuit Judge John F. Dillon was held in the court house in St. Paul. Dillon had just announced his resignation from the federal court, where he had served for the last ten years. At this time he was, according to court historian Jeffrey Brandon Morris, "probably the best-known lower federal court judge in the nation."

Former Governor Cushman Kellogg Davis, United States Attorney William W. Billson, former Chief Justice Thomas Wilson, former Attorney General Gordon E. Cole, former Associate Justice Charles E. Flandrau, and current United Sates District Court Judge Rensselaer Nelson paid brief tributes to Dillon.

The proceedings were reported in "The St. Paul Daily Globe" the next morning in an article headlined "Judge Dillon's Farewell."
