Viewing Milo Freling Stevens (1893-1944).

Milo Freling Stevens (1893-1944).

After graduating the Minnesota College of Law in 1923, Milo F. Stevens was admitted to the bar and began practicing in Stevens & Stevens, the family firm in Minneapolis. He worked hard, kept his clients out of court and brooked no criticism of the bar and bench. Other lawyers considered him "a great student of the law---literally a walking encyclopedia of case and statute law," a reputation acquired in part because "he read and digested every law as soon as passed, and as soon as available after a [legislative] session closed he had his private copy of Minnesota Statutes Annotated and every new statute catalogued."

He loved the village of St. Louis Park, where he and his family resided for two decades. There he served on the school board, chaired the Charter Commission, helped form the Civilian Defense Council, and acted as village attorney for many years.

He died on August 18, 1944, at age fifty-one. In memorial service for the Hennepin County Bar Association the following year, Helmuth E. Maag stated he was "in the true sense a real lawyer. He always practiced an unbending devotion to his profession. Unquestionable honest was the keystone of his character---constantly displayed in all his dealings with his clients, the courts and his opponents."
