Viewing Elmer E. Adams: "Incidents in the Life of Knute Nelson." (1923).Elmer E. Adams: "Incidents in the Life of Knute Nelson." (1923).On April 28, 1923, Senator Knute Nelson died. He had served one term in the Minnesota Senate, three terms in the U. S. Congress, one full term as Governor and about three weeks of a second term, and twenty-eight years as U. S. Senator. Two days later, the Fergus Falls Daily Journal carried Nelson's obituary as well as a lengthy article of anecdotes about him by Elmer E. Adams, a local banker, businessman and political supporter. While Adams admired Nelson's conservative politics, electoral success (he never lost an election) and his decades of public service, he also saw his "shortcomings" -- he was sometimes petty, intolerant, intransigent and demanding.
