The Benton Bar Association was formed in early March, 1882, in Lake Benton, Minnesota. At its second meeting on March 13, 1882, it was renamed the Lincoln County Bar Association.
Early bar associations had several functions, the establishment and maintenance of professional standards being one, guarding the reputation of the profession being another. The new bar association's minutes appeared on the front page of the "Lake Benton News" on March 21, 1882. They included a tribute to a recently deceased lawyer.
