In 1893, Charles Burke Elliott published "The Principles of the Law of Private Corporations -- with Leading and Illustrative Cases." Revised editions followed in 1895 and 1900. An enlarged 4th edition, "A Treatise on the Law of Private Corporations," by Howard S. Abbott, a member of the faculty of the University of Minnesota College of Law, was published in 1911 (it is posted in the "Treatises/Textbooks" category of the MLHP).
From 1893 to 1909, Elliott was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota College of Law, first as a lecturer, later as a professor. He saw that his students needed a casebook as well as a treatise on private corporations. Accordingly he prepared and edited a textbook, "Leading Cases on Private Corporations to Accompany Principles of Private Corporations," that was published by The Bowen-Merrill Company in 1898.
From 1909 to 1912, Elliott served as Associate Justice of the Philippines Supreme Court. It was during his absence from the country that book publishers enlisted other law professors to revise several of his popular law books, among which was his textbook on private corporations. An enlarged edition of Elliott by Professor Isaac Maurice Wormser (1887-1955) was published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company of Indianapolis in 1914. It is posted here.
