Elijah Barton, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 1883. He practiced law in Minneapolis for the next fifty-four years. He died on December 27, 1938, at age eighty-three. In memorial services the following year, Harry O. Irwin recalled him:
"As a lawyer, he was conscientious, careful and diligent. He was a well- read lawyer with a broad and accurate knowledge of the law. He was untiring in the interests of his clients, sound and practical in his advice. His preparation of his cases was thorough and exhaustive, and he was a successful practitioner whose arguments commanded attention and respect. He was a man of quiet and studious habits. He formed many friendships which he greatly enjoyed. He was highly respected in the profession for his ability, his high ethical standards and his genial character."
