Viewing Welcome J. Smith (1864-1946).

Welcome J. Smith (1864-1946).

Upon graduating the University of Michigan Law School in 1887, Welcome Smith moved to Winona and became a clerk with the Tawney & Randall law firm. Three years later he became a member of the firm. He served as Municipal Court Judge from 1901-1905. He practiced law in Winona until retirement in 1940. He died on July 21, 1946, at age eighty-two. In memorial proceedings for the county bar association in October of that year, he was recalled:

"Mr. Smith had a large and varied friendship, and was a man who was admired by the so called common and poor people for whom he very often performed services without charging a fee. He was a companionable, conscientious, lovable person, faithful to every trust, and always willingly counselled and guided the younger members of his profession. His loss will be felt for many years by the citizens of this community and his host of friends in the State of Wisconsin."
