William Windom, a Winona lawyer, served as U. S. Representative from Minnesota from 1859 to 1869; U. S. Senator from 1871 to 1881; Secretary of the Treasury under President Garfield from March 1881 to November 1881; U. S. Senator from 1881 to 1883; and Secretary of the Treasury under President Harrison from 1889 to death on January 29, 1891, at age sixty-three.
