For fifty-five years--from 1900 when he arrived in St. Cloud to 1955 when he died--William Boerger served his community. He was superintendent of schools for twenty-four years, editor of the local newspaper for three years, chair of the Stearns County Welfare Board, alderman, president of the city council, acting mayor, author, songwriter and lawyer.
Several years after his death in June 1955, at age seventy-nine, a memorial service was held in District Court for deceased members of the county bar. About William Boerger, a friend was quoted: "We who have worked with him know what an inspiration he was to youth; how he took pleasure in assisting the needy and downtrodden. No problem was too great, no task too small. The monument he has erected as a result of his loyal friendship and invaluable service to his fellow men will stand as a living memorial to all who knew him. His entire life was one of devotion. He truly was one of God?s noblemen."
