Viewing Edmund Rice Hollinshead (1855-1883).Edmund Rice Hollinshead (1855-1883).Edmund R. Hollinshead, the son of William M. Hollinshead, a leader of the Minnesota bar in the 1850s, was admitted to practice on March 4, 1878, at age twenty-three. He became an associate of Morris Lamprey, a successful St. Paul lawyer and wealthy real estate investor. When Lamprey died unexpectedly of diphtheria in early April 1879, Hollinshead took over much of this law business. Though only twenty-four years old, he soon demonstrated unusual legal talents and drew the respect of more experienced practitioners. Within a few years, however, he began exhibiting symptoms of tuberculosis. In early 1883, seeking a more hospitable climate, he traveled to New Orleans, then to San Antonio, Texas, where he died on March 15, 1883, aged twenty-eight. In his obituary, the St. Paul Daily Globe reported:
