Viewing Gary Weissman: Book Review of Gene Andereck, "Trial at Grand Marais" (1997).

Gary Weissman: Book Review of Gene Andereck, "Trial at Grand Marais" (1997).

When a judge in Cook County, Minnesota, issues an order granting temporary custody of a divorcing couple's two young daughters to the father, the mother and the girls flee, in a canoe on the Granite River, toward Canada. In response, the father and the paternal grandparents petition the court to convert the temporary order to permanent custody.

Gene Andereck's novel, "Trial at Grand Marais," toggles back and forth between the wilderness adventure of the daughters after the mom is injured and the bench trial in Cook County where the novel's protagonist, the mother's attorney, seeks to reverse the custody order without his client being available to testify. The author was a trial lawyer in Missouri who spent 50 summers canoeing in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. He died in 2004.

The novel is reviewed by Gary Weissman, a lawyer, mediator, arbitrator, adjunct professor of law in Minnesota from 1977 to 2008, and author of five novels. Retired he now lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
