Viewing Samuel N. Nichols (1862-1938).Samuel N. Nichols (1862-1938).Samuel Norman Nichols was born in Oslo, Norway in 1862; his family emigrated to Minnesota five years later. When his father suffered a debilitating stroke, young Sam and his brother assumed the responsibility of supporting their family. He never graduated from high school but managed to attend night school in later years. He became a printer, and was later employed by St. Paul and Minneapolis newspapers. In 1900 he was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue, Minneapolis Division, and held that post for 14 years. Meanwhile he attended night law school, graduating from the Minnesota College of Law in 1915. On June 10, 1915, he was admitted to the Minnesota bar. He was 52 years old. He specialized in probate and real estate law. On January 8, 1938, his remarkable life came to an end. He was 75 years old. In memorial proceedings for the Hennepin County Bar Association the following month, a fellow lawyer, Seth Lundquist, said:
